Pheromones and flying pets: the finishing touch for a calm cabin

What are these pheromones and how do they work?

Pheromones, put simply, are chemical signals animals use to communicate with each other. The one used in calming products (including Adaptil, which we use on board) is a synthetic copy of Dog Appeasing Pheromone (DAP). DAP has a rather lovely origin: it is released by nursing mother dogs to comfort and reassure their puppies after they are born. This reassurance does not wear off with age, so a dog can continue to detect and respond to it throughout its life.

How we use them on board

The cabin diffuser goes on before boarding, so the cabin is already treated when everyone boards. Carriers and bedding are sprayed ahead of time, and never onto an animal directly.

Why do we use them?

Because there is virtually no downside. They are unobtrusive and odourless, sitting in the background of the cabin, asking nothing of the animal and requiring nothing of you.

Alongside that, the potential upside is real. The research is strongest for puppies settling into new homes, and for dogs unsettled by loud noises such as thunderstorms, where research published in the Veterinary Record found a measurable reduction in signs of fear and anxiety. Vets generally regard pheromones as a worthwhile addition to a calm environment rather than a solution on their own. That is exactly how we treat them. One layer among several, rather than the pheromones doing the heavy lifting in keeping all passengers calm.

We would rather be straightforward about it than overstate the case. There is little research on the use of pheromones specifically in an aircraft cabin. We use them because they are safe, they cost the animal nothing, and there is a genuine reason to think they help.

Preparing together – what actually settles your pet

Pheromones are the smallest part of a more comprehensive process, and most of it happens well before anyone reaches the airport.

To help any dog before flying, have a recent vet check and mention any history of anxiety or behavioural concerns so it can be planned around. It is also worth bringing something familiar. A favourite blanket or toy that already smells of home makes for a calmer companion.

Every booking includes a pre-flight call. We use it to learn about your pet: how they travel, what their temperament is like, whether they settle easily. If there is any history of anxious behaviour, that is exactly what we want to hear in advance. It changes how we plan the cabin – who sits where, which animals are placed next to one another and how much attention your pet is likely to need on the day (particularly if they are flying Biscuit Class). We do everything we can to make the whole journey calm and comfortable for every passenger.

And the diffuser is more of a finishing touch on top of all of that.
